Verde Canyon Railroad Tours

“There is something special for every season on the train, from wildflowers, to Eagles, to fabulous unspoiled scenery. After 5 trips I still look forward to riding the train again.

Come and see The Wildflowers In Bloom!

train Clarkdale, AZ - Whenever one steps aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad for a ride through one of Arizona’s most scenic inner canyons, it is a trip back in time, and during the Spring, the canyon is even more enticing. The blooming flowers and cactus are spectacular in the Verde Canyon.

Surprises never cease as the train creeps carefully over a towering trestle, threading its way through a 680 foot man-made tunnel and around curve after curve to Perkinsville in a two hour journey before its trip home. Animals and waterfowl are visible year round, including Mule and Whitetail Deer, Antelope, Javelina, Red-tail Hawks, Treat Blue Heron and Belted Kingfishers. Observant passengers may even glimpse a Mountain Lion or Brown Bear along the way.

The railroad, originally built in 1911, was purchased by David L. Durbano, in 1988. It was used solely as a freight line to carry coal and cement between the towns of Drake and Clarkdale. “The addition of the passenger excursions in 1990, however, has been a phenomenal success,” explained Ron Lindsay, superintendent of operations. “During its maiden year, over 40,000 passengers explored the rugged Southwest canyonlands aboard our refurbished Metro North coaches and open-air viewing cars. Today, over 65,000 people per year enjoy the same unspoiled and protected wilderness area, many during March, April and May. Demand, from individuals and groups, encouraged us to add Mondays and two trains on Saturdays to our Spring schedule,” added Lindsay.

The train does not run every day of the year. The train departs Clarkdale generally at 1pm but the schedule varies each month. Please call us for the train schedule when booking a train package. The train depot has a full-service cafe and gift shop; food and beverages are also available on the train in coach or first class cars. All cars are climate-controlled and access open-air viewing cars to really experience the diverse natural beauty of the canyon. Advanced reservations for the Verde Canyon Railroad’s Fall Color Tours can be made by calling the Southwest Inn at Sedona (800-483-7422), located just 25 minutes from the train.
